Freddie Wilkinson, NH author of One Mountain, Thousand Summits: The Untold Story Tragedy and True Heroism on K2
In this powerful rendering of a well-publicized grim event, there is so much said about the courage and heroism of the climbers braving these geological wonders and the media's silence over the neglected native saviors. --Publisher's Weekly
An insider's account of one of the deadliest and most controversial tragedies in mountaineering history-the 2008 K2 disaster.
When eleven men perished on the slopes of K2 in August 2008, it was one of the deadliest single events in Himalayan climbing and made headlines around the world. Yet non of the surviving western climbers could explain precisely what happened. Their memories were self-admittedly fogged by exhaustion, hypoxia, and hallucinations. The truth of what happened lies with four Sherpa guides who were largely ignored by the mainstream media in the aftermath of the tragedy, who lost two of their own during the incident, and whose heroic efforts saved the lives of at least four climbers.
Freddie Wilkinson is a New England-based professional climber, mountain guide, and outdoor writer. He has made numerous first ascents on difficult peaks in Alaska, Patagonia, and the Himalayas. In 2007, the American Alpine Club awarded him the Robert Hicks Bates Award for outstanding accomplishments by a young climber. His writing frequently appears in the climbing media, including, Climbing Magazine, Rock and Ice, Alpinist, and the American Alpine Journal. Wilkinson lives in a 12x12 cabin with no running water and a “super-fast” wireless internet connection in North Conway, New Hampshire.
