Frederick Reiken, to share from his new novel, Day For Night

May 7 2010 7:00 pm
May 7 2010 8:30 pm

Reiken, author of such classics as The Odd Sea and The Lost Legends of New Jersey, will be sharing from his latest book, Day For Night.

Frederick Reiken holds a B.A. from Princeton and an M.F.A. from the
University of California, Irvine. His first novel, The Odd Sea, was
chosen by Booklist as one of the 20 Best First Novels of the Year and
won the Hackney Literary Award. He lives in Boston and teaches graduate
writing classes at Emerson College.

"If you look hard enough into the history of anything, you will
discover things that seem to be connected but are not." So claims a
character in Frederick Reiken's wonderful, surprising novel, which
seems in fact to be determined to prove just the opposite. How else to
explain the threads that link a middle-aged woman on vacation in
Florida with a rock and roll singer visiting her comatose brother in
Utah, where he's been transported after a motorcycle injury in Israel,
where he works with a man whose long-lost mother, in a retirement
community in New Jersey, recognizes him in a televised report about an
Israeli-Palestinian skirmish? And that's not the half of it.

In Day For Night, critically acclaimed writer Frederick Reiken spins an
unlikely and yet utterly convincing story about people lost and found.
They are all refugees from their own lives or history's cruelties, and
yet they wind up linked to each other in compelling and unpredictable
ways that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Why Shop Indie?

For every $100 you spend at a local indie business, $68 will stay in the community. When you spend that same $100 at a national chain, only $43 stays in your community.

Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own market: the people in their community. They know you and know what you like and want.

You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. Why would you want your community to look that way? More diversity in your community enhances its appeal.

Even more reasons to shop indie...
