Matthew Dicks, author of Something's Missing, to read from his latest, Unexpectedly Milo

Aug 21 2010 7:00 pm

We're so excited to have Matthew Dicks return to Exeter for his upcoming book. If you've spent any time at Water Street over the last year or so, you've probably had recommended, or overheard someone else have recommended, Something Missing, Matthew's first book. If you were looking for something hilarious, I probably handed you Something Missing. If you were looking for something quirky and cute, I probably handed you Something Missing. If you were looking for a fun, well-written book, I probably handed you Something Missing. You get the picture. This is a book we like. A lot.

Here's what Publishers Weekly had to say about Unexpectedly Milo:

"Dicks offers another neurotic romp (after Something Missing), this one about a Connecticut home nurse and closet OCD sufferer who, recently separated from his uptight wife, satisfies the demands of his disorder by, among other things, flipping open jars of grape jelly and singing German pop music. Among Milo Slade's geriatric patients are a man dependent on Viagra for his addiction to Internet pornography and a woman who makes Milo rake her shag carpeting. Milo, meanwhile, stumbles onto a cache of videotapes that form a mysterious womans video diary. In it, she confesses her secrets and talks about the guilt she carries around about a childhood friend named Tess who disappeared and is, the woman believes, dead. The story prompts Milo to take a road trip to North Carolina to find Tess, and though it upsets his routine, he is finally forced to share the demands of his disorder with someone else, which changes his rather grave perspective on life."

Not only are his books wonderful and hilarious, but Matthew truly is a great guy. Check out his very funny blog, and please join us for the reading.

Why Shop Indie?

For every $100 you spend at a local indie business, $68 will stay in the community. When you spend that same $100 at a national chain, only $43 stays in your community.

Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own market: the people in their community. They know you and know what you like and want.

You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. Why would you want your community to look that way? More diversity in your community enhances its appeal.

Even more reasons to shop indie...
