Water Street Bookstore's Banned Book Night

Oct 1 2012 7:00 pm

Join us in celebrating books! The New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union (NHCLU) and Water Street Bookstore are joining together to raise awareness of banned and challenged books during this year's Banned Book Week.

Claire Ebel, Executive Director of the NHCLU will start the night with a discussion about freedom to read and the First Amendment. Notable Exeter citizens will read from their favorite banned and challenged books.

Our readers for the evening will be:

Rev. Deanna Swilling, Pastor of First Baptist Church
    Frank Heffron, Retired Lawyer and Political Activist
    Molly Stevenson, History Teacher, Exeter High School
    David Weber, English Instructor, Phillips Exeter Academy
    Lionel Ingram, Chair, Exeter Historical Society Board of Trustees
    Barbara Rimkunas, Curator, Exeter Historical Society
    Hope Godino, Director, Exeter Public Library
    Carol Aten, Chair, Leadership Seacoast
    Liz Whaley, Bookseller and Retired English Teacher

Want to be a part of the festivities? Email us at info@waterstreetbooks.com for more information.

Don't miss this chance to celebrate our freedom to read.

The New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union was founded to defend those freedoms which are guaranteed to every individual by the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. Throughout history, frequent attempts have been made to curtail the civil liberties of groups with radical or unpopular positions or associations. The NHCLU is often the only organization able to act to protect those who would otherwise stand alone in defense of their Constitutional rights in New Hampshire.The NHCLU and its Foundation have three principal objectives in the fight to preserve civil liberties:

•Representation of people whose rights have been violated;
•Education of citizens concerning their civil liberties under the Constitution;
•Challenges to laws which infringe on individual freedom

Why Shop Indie?

For every $100 you spend at a local indie business, $68 will stay in the community. When you spend that same $100 at a national chain, only $43 stays in your community.

Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own market: the people in their community. They know you and know what you like and want.

You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. Why would you want your community to look that way? More diversity in your community enhances its appeal.

Even more reasons to shop indie...
