Poets Matt Miller and Cindy Veach

Join us for a joint reading with these two talented poets, Matt Miller and Cindy Veach!

In The Wounded for the Water, Matt Miller explores the littoral zone; between the firmament of experience and understanding, between first breath and death, where strict definitions of gender, fatherhood, and masculinity swirl in the pull of tides and the curl and crush of waves. In these lyrical meditations, we are witness to our own drowning in family and history, in politics and love. We are dragged across reefs and pounded into the shore, realizing ultimately that the only way to avoid drowning is to embrace the maelstrom and breathe in the water.

Cindy Veach's collection Gloved Against Blood explores the fraught relationships of four generations of women against a backdrop of the patriarchal textile mills of 19th century Lowell, Massachusetts. It speaks to family, infidelities, abandonment and the close work, women's work of mending what is torn, making it like new despite the forces of inherited histories.

Matt W Miller was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is the author of The Wounded for the Water (Salmon Poetry) , Club Icarus (University of North Texas Press), selected by Major Jackson as the 2012 Vassar Miller Poetry Prize winner, and Cameo Diner: Poems (Loom). He has published work previously in Slate, Harvard Review, Notre Dame Review, Southwest Review, Southeast Review, Florida Review, Third Coast, The Rumpus, Poetry Daily, and other journals. He was winner of the 2015 River Styx Micro-Beer, Micro-fiction Prize and Iron Horse Review's 2015 Trifecta Poetry Prize. He has been awarded a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Poetry and a Walter E. Dakin Fellowship in Poetry from Sewanee Writers' Conference. He has taught creative writing and literature at Stanford University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, New England College, Harvard Extension and the Concord State Prison for Men. He teaches English and coaches football at Phillips Exeter Academy where he also co-directs the Writers’ Workshop at Exeter.
